Naoko Takeuchi shaped Japanese pop and anime culture with her creation titled Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon; she was partly inspired by Super Sentai, a group of superheroes where each character has their own colored costume. The blueprint also incorporated astrology, planets, her own life experience, and preferences. Her idea was serialized and first published on December 28th, 1991. Introducing the world to a teenage civilian named Tsukino Usagi who uses a magical brooch to transform into Sailor Moon, a soldier of love and justice. Soon, other pretty soldiers that are bestowed a planetary symbol join Sailor Moon to combat outer space evildoers who seek to steal life energy and Earth's resources. Toei Animation produced the anime series and aired the first episode for TV Asahi on March 7th, 1992.

I cannot imagine my childhood without Sailor Moon. I was introduced to the series by my friend Rachelle; her mother would wake up at 6am to record the episodes on a VCR because it only aired in the morning on Channel Eleven (WB) back in the early 1990s. My mother did the same but rented tapes from a Chinese blockbuster and recorded the episodes. Years later, still in elementary, I discovered S3 and S4 on Toonami. And would buy the rest of the series, films, and OVAs on VHS tapes. Every time, as a kid, when the episode ends, I would watch the ending song play, especially Heart Moving and Princess Moon. The series awakened my longing for Prince Charming; oh, how she would clasp her hands on her face after Tuxedo Mask says an affirmation or two, or how she dreamily looks up at the sky when he floats toward the moonlight.

I was able to obtain serious wish list pieces: a dual Usagi in the first opening ever; Princess Moon, which had evaded me for years; a dreamy Ami; and the loving look of goodbye from Sailor Chibi Moon. I’m still on the hunt for moments that are iconic and personal to me. Possibly the most random and affordable piece is this cel, who happens to be a side character to a premium side character! But it was a scene where the premium side character, okay, her name is Tomoko Takase, discovers her crush outside her book signing with another woman clinging to his arm. I felt it, that kind of longing Usagi has for Mamoru, except Tomoko will never be embraced by Mr. Side-Side Character. Though my collection is very small, I want to curate pieces that mean the most to me. It’s very difficult because there are too many episodes that tug at my heartstrings.

From the same Chinese blockbuster, my mother rented the first four episodes of Ranma ½ for me. She probably asked the store owner, “You got any cartoons for kids?” My eyes widen when a topless (crap, I remember bottomless too), female Ranma dreams of multiple Kuno's professing their love for her. My mom is definitely one of those who thought, “Cartoons are just for kids!” Well done, Disney; you programmed her well. Unlike most Ranma ½ fans who grew up with the franchise when the series was dubbed in English, I watched most of the series in the early 2010s. In some way, it is why I seem to favor Akane over Shampoo. The episode where a long-haired Akane challenged Kuno to buy time for Ranma to change back to a boy was unbelievably cool. For me, she represented Japan’s concept of first love.

The most random series featured on the site is Mama Loves the Poyopoyo-Saurus; it’s a comedic series about a couple facing difficulty raising their two young children. You are probably wondering, “How did you get from Sailor Moon and Ranma to this?” I blame it on my auntie; I'm not sure if it was a 90s Chinese parent thing or a DNA thing, but she also rented various animes at a bootleg blockbuster. She definitely has more sense than my mom (love you) and made sure that the cartoon is REALLY for children. I mean, my mom randomly rented The End of Evangelion for me when I was twelve years old; my initial reaction to the opening was how did Shinji get yogurt in his hand? The whole movie made nudity in Ranma ½ look like child’s play! … Ma! Anyway, my cousin and I would regularly watch Mama Loves the Poyopoyo-Saurus, and my auntie would blame my cousin’s typical toddler tantrums on either (a) me or (b) this cartoon. Decades later, I saw cels from this series pop up on auction. Those were premium pieces from the opening, and another listing from an episode my cousin and I loved.

I am also a huge Disney nerd and have a small collection of production art from the legendary studio. Another medium such as stop-motion animation is another favorite of mine, especially LAIKA’s Coraline. Fortunately, I am able to acquire a few pieces, which you can find in my other site, Enchanted Hour.

Aside from animation, I love old-school Hollywood, with Audrey Hepburn being my eternal numero uno; Marilyn Monroe is also my idol and inspiration; music by Fleetwood Mac and Lana Del Rey is food for my soul, and I wish spring were all year round. The obscure Vanilla Sky is a criminally underrated Tom Cruise spectacle directed by Cameron Crowe, my all-time favorite film. In terms of my belief system, I am Buddhist during the Lunar New Year and moon cake festivities and Catholic when Easter and Christmas come around. I identify as Chinese during the Olympic season and American over Super Bowl weekend, whatever time and place are riper.

SITE'S NAME

Kingyo Hanabi (金魚花火) means Goldfish Fireworks, a song released by Japanese artist Ai Otsuka on August 18th, 2004; it was solely written by her and produced by Max Matsuura. It was her fifth single and charted number three on the Oricon charts.

RANMA ½ HISTORY

It began in 2010; I was an active member of a forum called Anime Beta, where collectors of mostly anime art would engage in threads about wishlists, new acquisitions, and inquiries about preservation, and some would have their inventory up for sale. From there I discovered Miss M’s gallery—a staggering portfolio of the most beautiful Shampoo cels I had ever seen; she even has stunning pieces of my favorite, the volatile Japanese schoolgirl Akane.

With more than a hundred cels, Miss M divided her Ranma ½ sections into general series, music videos, Ryoga, and Shampoo. Visiting her gallery in emerald envy, the highlights were Shampoo in bikini shots for days, serving warm buns with a cheeky smile, and the most coveted was a key master setup of Shampoo from an OVA episode, in the shower, nude, with her purple locks wrapped around in a towel.

Unfortunately, but also understandably, Miss M noted on the front page that none of her cels were for sale. A quick glance over her gallery, a visitor can safely assume that she doesn’t collect for the sake of it being her favorite show; her purchases were either grade A to B shots—she spent years in battle cry auction wars with the thirstiest Shampoo simps, an admirable feat. Despite an array of gorgeous cels of almost all the main characters, her key master of Shampoo bathing is the mother of all wishlist for me.

Years later, I checked Anime-Beta and saw she had posted that her gallery was up for market!

I drafted a message politely asking if the Shampoos were available; I didn’t want to startle her with my loony enthusiasm. As I was about to hit send, I reviewed her updated post and felt a wash of deep disappointment when I noticed her deadline for the sale.

I was way past overdue… Heartbroken, I left the thread.

Entering the 2020s, as if Confucius were rewarding me for past karmic cycles or good behavior before Lunar New Year, I saw a Facebook sale post containing familiar cels of the past. I wondered, “Oh my Buddha, could it be...?" I have seen that set of Akane cels from a music video before; it was, indeed, from the incredible collection of Miss M!

Not only was it lovely catching up with her, but I was also able to acquire pieces that I long desired from her impressive vault of primo cels, which all will be linked back to this page. On a personal note, it was not easy for Miss M to sell her prized possessions, I’m very grateful that she took the time to let me buy certain cels without promoting it social media. She has not changed since our Anime-Beta days, she is just as bright and witty as I remember her.

Exhibit A: Dreams do come true, even if you wait a decade for it! (Disclaimer: Depending on the circumstance, you may not manifest exactly what you want. Time may pass and you will find something better, or not.) Nonetheless, がんばってください!
